[printed letterhead: Tuskegee Normal School]
Tuskegee, Ala., May 31”1887
Dear friend:
You have probably heard of this school before. I don't suppose you will object, however, to having me write and tell you something more about it. It has quite a number of friends at the North and it may be that you have in some way helped us here. I am a girl from Ga. I went to Atlanta University three years. This is my first year at Tuskegee. I have a sister who teaches here, that was one of my reasons for coming to this school. I am in the A Middle class this year and hope to be in the Senior class and finish the course of study next year. There are some students here who work in the day and go to school at night. They come mostly from the farming districts of this State. They are not able to go to day school, and although they work hard all day and are tired and sleepy when night comes, they are so anxious to learn [p. 2] that they work faithfully and hard with their lessons for about two hours every night. I am one of the night school teachers. In this way I pay my board bills. Of course I am quite glad to have an opportunity of helping myself in school but I get quite tired sometimes of being in school all day and teaching at night. We have quite a large number of students this year, more than ever before. You might be interested to know some thing about the work with which I am connected __the night school. Every evening after supper all of us go to the chapel, which is in Porter Hall, to prayers and after prayers we have school. There are only three classes of these students. The B Middle, which is the highest class, has only two members, the Junior class has about twelve and the Preparatory class has about thirty. There are three night-school teachers. We try to teach them simple, useful and necessary things. I teach them Grammar and Geography. I would like to tell you more about our work but can't now. I will be glad to hear from you at any time you find it convenient to write.
Respectfully,
Sarah L. Hunt
