Montecito is especially celebrated as havingbeen the home of a mammoth grape vine, whichupon its death was taken east and exhibited at thePhiladelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876.This vine was twice as large as the famous vineat Fontainebleu, France, larger than any foundamong the villas in the vicinity of Rome, andsurpassed any of which Pliny gives record in hishistory and travels. The Kings Vine at Hamp-ton Court, England, the largest and most notedin the Old World, only equals in diameter one ofthe main branches of this vine.
