English: A Sangpyeong Tongbo (常平通寳) cash coin with a flower hole issued by the Ch'unch'on Township Military Office (春川管理營) Mint.
If you look carefully, you will notice that this cash coin cast at the Ch'unch'on Township Military Office (like the "Government Office of Pukhan Mountain Fortress" from Gary Ashkenazy's collection) has an eight-sided "flower hole" ("rosette hole"). In China, cash coins with flower holes were very scarce until the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Cash coins exhibiting flower holes gradually decreased during the following dynasties. The last Chinese cash coins with flower holes were probably cast at the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). This particular Korean cash coin is most unusual because very few non-Chinese cash coins with flower holes have been found. |
