English: On October 29, 2012, Sandy came crashing ashore near Brigantine, New Jersey, as an extraordinarily large post-tropical cyclone. This image from the GOES-14 satellite is a Special Super Rapid Scan Operations (SRSO) image of Sandy as it was approaching landfall that day. The satellite's SRSO images captured infrared and visible data every minute during the storm and relayed that information to forecasters on the ground. Highly detailed cloud structures can be seen in this imagery, along with the precise location of Sandy's center of circulation. Also known as "Superstorm Sandy," it pushed a catastrophic storm surge into the Northeastern Seaboard. The highest storm surges and greatest inundation on land occurred in the states of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, especially in and around the New York City metropolitan area. Numerous people tried to ride out the storm in their seaside residences, which led to many of the 71 direct deaths. The cost of the storm in the U.S. was an astounding $71 billion.
