Summary
[edit]DescriptionSandwell Gate - geograph.org.uk - 1606520.jpg |
English: Sandwell Gate, Town Wall, Hartlepool, County Durham. Built in 1400 to give access for fishermen through the Town Wall to Fish Sands 1606546. The walls were built from local limestone to protect the town from Scottish raiders. At completion they were about 6m high and 2m thick. The triangular abutments enclosing the arch are unique in English walled towns. The walls fell into disuse in the late 1400s except where, as here, they formed part of the sea defences. The name Sandwell derives from a the now dried up chalybeate spring which was located on the beach nearby. |
