Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sandgate. In this location there was a gate in the old town wall, standing on sand by the river. It was an area of crowded housing and industry connected with the river traffic and commerce. The slums were all removed by the start of the C20th and the gateway was retained as a pedestrian route now leading down towards the Millennium Bridge. It is a location for public art including the ornate iron railings by Alan Dawson (1996). Just left of centre is the bronze sculpture, 'Siren' by Andre Wallace (1995), with a bell as an ear-ring 1415053, paired with 'River God' (1996) by the same artist 477218, behind the photographer 1756697
