Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sandbanks - Stone Groyne A number of these stone groynes have been and still are being installed along the beach between Sandbanks and Bournemouth. It is believed that they will be more effective at reduced erosion that the more traditional groynes. The solid traditional groynes can cause turbulence which in turn can accelerate erosion. The new ones made of large chunks of local Portland stone are permeable and therefore take energy out of the waves without causing turbulence. Already the earlier ones are showing that they are effective in causing deposition of sand and silt picked up by the tides from other locations. There are the added bonuses of flat walkways on the tops of them providing fishing platforms and the rocks providing an artificial reef for marine life.
