Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Stoa of Kotys forms the north-eastern border of the main Sanctuary. It was built in the early 3rd century BC and was mentioned by Pausanias. The overall Stoa building is a large rectangular complex measuring 63 x 31.5 metres overall with a large, central courtyard that was open to the east. Three long, narrow rooms opened off the courtyard to the north. On the southern side was a series of much smaller rooms. Behind these rooms, a two-aisled, L-shaped portico ran along the southern and western sides. This portico included a front colonnade of Doric columns, with an interior Ionic colonnade. The open area immediately south was lined with statues and dedications. The courtyard and rooms may have been used as accommodation in the form of an inn with sleeping chambers, shops and food outlets.

The stoa was damaged in the 1st century BC. It was later repaired and the roof replaced by Roman senator Antoninus Pythodorus around AD 160. At this time, the neighbouring rooms to the east of the stoa were converted to a baths complex. In the 3rd century AD, use of the Stoa appears to have changed as Ionic column bases from the Stoa’s inner colonnade were used in the construction of the Diocletian-era Perimetric Wall.

Only the lower level and paving of the Stoa of Kotys remains however its arrangement is still somewhat clear. The large rectangular inner courtyard is visible with the foundations and partial lower wall courses marking the outline of the rooms. The surrounding pavement and an extensive network of drains and settling basins show the importance of managing the water supply at Epidaurus. Fallen column fragments and statue bases also remain.
