Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Sacred Fountain was built in the 3rd century BC as part of the extensive overhaul of the Sanctuary’s water supply. An aqueduct from the spring at Kynortion Hill supplied the fountain. The flowing water then continued via a series of drainage channels to the Hellenistic Cistern to the west of the Sanctuary. The Sacred Fountain was surrounded by a rectangular fountainhouse with a vaulted ceiling. Entrance into the fountainhouse was from the west via a courtyard. A stone arched gateway gave access to a narrow corridor that led to a basin for drawing water. A storage cistern in the rear wall also held a supply of water. The fountain continued to be an important water source into the Roman period during which it was repaired and expanded. A stairway and portico were added at this time to connect the Sacred Fountain with the nearby Doric Fountain.

The walls of the Sacred Fountainhouse remain standing to a height of over a metre. The arrangement of the courtyard is not clear, however the entrance to the narrow corridor and the arrangement of the basin and storage tank can be clearly seen. The later Roman stairway also remains visible.
