Español: Juan de Herrera, auxiliado por Antonio de Villacastín dirigió la obra desde 1572 hasta el final (1584), y le imprimió su sello característico. Los trabajos de ornamentación, sin embargo no terminaron hasta comienzos del siglo XVII.
Herrera, estudioso de las teorías del romano Vitrubio, es una de las grandes figuras de la arquitectura española de todos los tiempos e influyó decisivamente en la arquitectura española del último cuarto de siglo. Otras obras de Herrera, al margen del Escorial, serán la Lonja de Sevilla y la catedral de Valladolid. La arquitectura herreriana se basaba en el protagonismo de la pureza de la línea frente a los elementos decorativos No fue azarosa, por tanto, la inmensidad de los muros del edificio, casi desnudos y sólo interrumpidos por hileras de ventanas. Los torreones de las esquinas añaden un sentido militar a la construcción. Estas torres se rematan en chapiteles a cuatro aguas, con pizarra negra, que repiten el contraste cromático con la piedra. La decoración arquitectónica se basa en columnas jónicas y dóricas y frontones triangulares, además de pináculos con bolas. En el exterior destacan El Jardín de los Frailes y la Galería de convalecientes. Felipe II era un gran amante de la naturaleza por lo que el Jardín de los Frailes es un amplio espacio ajardinado, en el que se diseñó una docena de verdes parterres en torno a igual número de pequeños estanques de cuyo centro surge una fuente de sonoras aguas. Estos jardines, en su extremo más septentrional, están coronados por una de las realizaciones arquitectónicas más bellas, la Galería de Convalecientes, situada entre la Enfermería y la Torre de la Botica, está configurada sobre un conjunto de columnas dóricas que forman un ángulo recto.
