d at a point near the present Mis-sion Street Viaduct, and was piped to a res-ervoir at Sixteenth and Brannan streets thathas long been abandoned, although the curi-ous may trace its outlines by following thecinder path on the grounds of Lick-Wilmer-ding School. In 1862 water was brought to San Fran-cisco from the Upper Pilarcitos Dam bymeans of a wooden flume thirty-two mileslong. This flume delivered water to LagunaHonda, which is situated in the hills west ofTwin Peaks at an elevation of 370 feetabove sea-level. Portions of that old flume,reconstructed and repaired, remained in ser-vice through Sutro Forest, on the west sideof Mount Davidson, until residential devel-opment of that section—the subdivision ofSt. Francis Wood, etc.—made its replace-ment by pipes necessary about the year1918. Looking from the inlet across the waters of San Andres Lake pumps been quickly installed and waterpumped from San Pedro Valley, near Sa-lada Beach, over the mountains into Pilar-citos Reservoir. In 1865 Spring Valley purchased all theproperty and franchises of the San Fran-cisco City Water Works, which had beenincorporated just one year before SpringValley. This senior company possessed theLobos Creek supply, which it carried in aflume around the edge of the bay from LobosCreek to Black Point at the foot of what isnow Van Ness Avenue. At Black Point thewater was pumped up the side of the hillinto reservoirs at Francisco Street and Lom-bard Street. This delivery of water began onSeptember 16, 1858, just eighty-six daysafter the incorporation of Spring Valley.The reservoirs, at Francisco and Hyde, andLombard and Hyde, are still important unitsin the water system. The Lobos Creek flumehas long since passed out of use, but thewaters of Lobos Creek are still used by theUnited States Govern
