Peninsula reservoirs. When thereservoir is full the area of the water surfaceis over 1400 acres. In preparing plans for the structure, it waskept in mind that ultimately the dam will bethirty-five feet higher than its present height,and provision was made for this additionalheight by leaving two benches, or berms,about thirty-five feet lower than the existingcrest. To raise the dam to its ultimate height of250 feet it will be necessary to commencework at some time when the water surface ofthe lake is lower than the benches and fromthis point continue the structure by the dep-osition of material in the same way that hasbeen followed in the present construction. Itwill require about 300,000 cubic yards ofmaterial to do this work. Simultaneously, a tunnel about 10,000 feetlong will be driven through the ridge whichseparates Calaveras Reservoir from UpperAlameda Creek, and the waters of this creekwill be diverted into the reservoir.
