Description

We took a day long side trip to the Monterey, CA area to visit the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. Near Monterey is a beautiful little lighthouse called the Point Pinos Lighthouse. It is a very old lighthouse and has been active since 1855. The facility is open to tours, so we took a few minutes to photograph it and walk through it.

It is equipped with a 3rd order fixed fresnel lens but exhibits a flashing light. The flash was originally produced by putting an "eclipser" device inside the lens, between the lamp and the lens itself. The eclipser is on display in the basement of the lighthouse. Currently it is flashed electronically.

I've always been impressed with the details on lighthouses. This is a closeup of the copper roof on the lantern of the lighthouse. Notice the little lions heads that are drain spouts for water runoff? Pretty cool!
