Description

PARROQUIA DE SANTO DOMINGO DE GUZMÁN.

Church and ex_convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán.


Tiene sus orígenes en la década de 1510,cuando se construye en las cercanías de la entonces llamada Plaza de San Miguel(actualmente llamada del Adelantado)una ermita bajo jurisdicción de la parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios,llamada de la Pura Concepción.En 1527 es elegida por la Orden Dominica como iglesia para el convento masculino que construían en la ciudad.Ya en 1529 el segundo Adelantado don Pedro Fernández de Lugo cede unos terrenos de su propiedad para ampliar la iglesia,que cambia de nombre para llamarse Santo Domingo de Guzmán,pues ya existía un templo principal con el título de la Concepción.Pero los frailes no pueden construir el templo y el convento por falta de capital,por lo que el Cabildo de la isla accede a darles 150 fanegas de trigo al año a cambio de que impartieran gramática,lógica y filosofía.Con esta dotación se construyó el convento,edificándose la iglesia a costa del cuarto Adelantado.Las obras comenzaron en 1570,terminándose hacia 1600.En el siglo XIX,con la Desamortización de Mendizábal,los dominicos abandonan el convento,quedando la iglesia como Sagrario Catedral en 1847.El 11 de noviembre de 1943 este histórico templo es elevado a parroquia por mandato del obispo fray Albino Menéndez-Reigada,retirándose el Sagrario Catedral a la Parroquia de los Remedios,en la propia Sede Catedralicia. Ya en 1906 se cambió el suelo de losa chasnera por mosaico hidraulico.Así,se trata de un edificio que conserva las caracteristicas originales de sus distintas etapas constructivas
