Description
English: Well defined gouge zone observed cutting granodiorite in core through the San Andreas fault, Mojave segment near Elizabeth Lake, California. Displacement unknown. This sample was collected as part of a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power project to understand earthquake hazards related to the Elizabeth Lake Tunnel, part of the Los Angeles aqueduct system that crosses the San Andreas fault near Elizabeth Lake. Note the distinct, cross-cutting gouge zones identifiable by color variations and sharp boundaries. Core is 6 centimeters in diameter.
