Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1856, this Italianate-style house at 510 North Carroll Street in Madison, Wisconsin, was designed by August Kutzbock for Samuel R. Fox, a hardware merchant. In 1860 it became home to Napoleon Bonaparte Van Slyke, a banker, and his wife, Annie Van Slyke. Van Slyke was then cashier for the Dane County Bank and a regent of the University of Wisconsin. He was also involved in building the first city hall, establishing Forest Hill cemetery, and some questionable financial maneuvers.

The house features a sandstone exterior with a low-slope front and side gable roof, dentils and paired, ornate brackets at the eaves, extruded corner pilasters, decorative window trim surrounds, four-over-four double-hung windows, a front door with an arched transom and decorative trim surround, and ornate chimneys that echo the shape of the house itself. The walls are clad in local sandstone, laid in a German masonry style where large and small blocks alternate. The house was modified circa 1915, adding a rear wing and the present front porch.

The house is a contributing structure in the Mansion Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
