Description |
Red & white, double jacquard coverlet with two trade blocks of an eagle with spread wings and dated "1842." Bottom border is fern lea design. Side borders are bird of paradise. Field pattern of stylized floral design and 8 sided star centered with a flower. Top is hemmed. Bottom has self fringe, approx. 3" woven by Samuel Graham.; Samuel Graham emigrated to the U. S. from England in 1823, and eventually landed in New Castle, Indiana. He set up his weaving business in a log cabin, and set about producing a large volume of coverlets. His business was so successful that he hired two employees and purchased many acres of land. This double jacquard coverlet in white cotton and coral wool features a stylized floral and star center or field, with Graham’s most popular border design of the bird of paradise and fern leaf design. The eagle with spread wings was his trademark prior to 1850. After that, he used an urn with flowers motif to mark his coverlets. |
