Text Appearing Before Image:
reposeful enough;but out of that Alpinestillness often bursts fortha destructive torrent. Thus this simple and kind-ly man, who under hissmiling face hid a hearteasily moved, whose eyes, protected by the everlasting eye-glass, never couldentirely conceal the infinite goodness—poured out,all through his novels, a wealth of idealistic passion.Cherbuliez never came under the spell of art.He lived the life of an ordinary citizen, and hadnot much coi^tact with portrait-painters. No oilpainting, no bust of him exists. We have pub-lished, as frontispiece, the only original engravingwhich has been done of this perfect gentleman. His iconography is limited to the few pictures ofhim, already middle-aged, which we have beenable to reproduce here. There is no medallion,no miniature, no statuette to aid us in our descrip-tion of him. Even the Museum of Geneva pos-sesses no souvenir with which to recall the manwho honoured the great Helvetic city by theuprightness of his talent. OCTAVE UZANNE. ^ 354
