Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sampford Arundel: railway near Whiteball Tunnel. Seen from a lane by the entrance to Marlands. The Bristol - Exeter line, originally surveyed by I K Brunel, descends from the tunnel, behind the camera, towards Wellington. It was near here on 9 May 1904 that the Great Western Railway locomotive ‘City of Truro’, now preserved, reputedly reached 102.3 mph going down the bank with an ocean mail train from Plymouth. This was the first time that a speed of over 100 mph had been recorded for a steam locomotive in the UK, although the true speed may have been slightly under this figure. The train weight was light – 148 tons – but the engine took 123.25 minutes to cover the 127.8 miles between Plymouth and Bristol; and over quite a hilly route too. Looking north east
