Summary

[edit]
Description

The 7th Annual Los Angeles Travel & Adventure Show, taking place 14-15 January 2012, at Long Beach Convention Center.

Probably the most popular keynote speaker for the show: Samantha Brown, host of Passport to Europe and other Passport series of shows on the Travel Channel. Her talk revolved around her travel mistakes, such as airtight plastic wraps on hotel soap bars as well as the tendency of some hotel faucets to not run hot water for minutes. Her pieces of advice, after having covered so much territory in Europe and Asia, and traveling 230 days per year: visit a local grocery store to learn the local language fast (those canned food displays are PERFECT flash cards for vocabulary building), and get acquainted with the hotel room!

During the question-and-answer session at the end of the talk, Brown also talked about how she had studied musical theater but eventually found passion in the travel industry via luck. I myself had a question about how to deal with nightmare/disappointing destinations - citing Amsterdam as my own example and Venice as my mother's example - and she also pointed out to the toughness of Naples, Italy as a similar nightmare, and advised me to "go along with it, and don't keep expectations too high" - after all, it IS possible to salvage the experience and have a great time, as she did in Naples.

Brown's presence was sponsored by Taiwan tourism board, who had hosted her in Taiwan to produce a few travel episodes, and she had a meet-and-greet after the talk at Taiwan's booth.
