Description
English: The temple of Samaimai Devi is located in the middle of Shanti Forest in Tilaurakot, an ancient site of Kapilvastu district. This is Tilaurakot where Lord Gautam Buddha spent 29 years. This Samai Mai temple is considered to be the oldest temple and PC Mukherjee in his report of 1899 has even mentioned about the present Samai Mai temple. He excavated the pits on the west and east sides of the temple and revealed the fact that there were many structures, including octagonal and square buildings, built on different dates.

At this time, the lower wall of the Mai temple is carved with bricks and mixed with bricks. These bricks are associated with the Gupta period from the 4th to the 7th century AD.

Devotees throng this temple on Navratri, the great festival of Nepalis, Vijayadashami. In this temple, devotees have a tradition of offering specially made elephants made of clay. The temple is under a very large pipal root. This temple is considered to be the family goddess of the Shakya kings. The site was discovered by Emperor Ashoka of Magadha between 225 and 245 BC. Archaeologists believe that this place was the capital of Lord Gautama Buddha's father, the Shakya king Shuddhodhana. As this place is associated with Lord Buddha, this place is of great historical, religious and tourist importance. It was from this place that Gautama Buddha left his palace and family in search of enlightenment.
