Summary
[edit]DescriptionSalts Hole and Holm Oak at Holkham looking West - geograph.org.uk - 468222.jpg |
English: Salts Hole & Holm Oak at Holkham looking West The origins of Salts Hole (water pool) is described in another view shown in this grid square. Also shown to the right is "an unusual evergreen tree, a native of the Mediterranean called the holm oak. It was introduced into Britain about 400 years ago and thrives in difficult seaside conditions because it is resistant to drought and to salt winds." [English Nature]. The Romans apparently used it for charcoal burning and to extract tannin to preserve leather. |
