Summary

[edit]
Description A male Baccharis bush at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Baccharis are dioecious and have separate male and female plants! These plain looking male flowers have a heavenly fragrance and the entire shrub is literally buzzing and vibrating with insect activity! Butterflies, bees, wasps, flies and beetles abound with the cast of characters constantly changing. This is appropriate for a plant who's genus is named after Bacchus (Dionysus), the god of wine and inspired madness! The seeds of the female plants are poisonous but the leaves & roots have been used in the brewing of healing concoctions. Most of the year you would not notice this humble shrub but when in bloom, they are the shopping mall's of the insect world and the bright, white female flowers are visible from a great distance.
