Title |
Sale of a Wife in Smithfield Market |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
English: Social satire; a large, ugly woman with a plumed bonnet stands in front of a bench, a rope around her neck and a man behind her considering her; a second man sits on the bench, one leg securing the end of the rope, pointing at her and holding her chin; a third man in front of the bench, with an apron and his hat in his hand, gestures towards her while a fourth man in hat and neckerchief lays his hand on the third man's shoulder; text below explains that the second man is trying to sell the woman, whom he describes as "Beef to the Heels", with invisible horns that will make themselves felt, along with ten pounds worth of bad halfpence, for half a guinea; the third man says that he will take up the offer, although he has had two wives that he would have sold for half the sum. 25 July 1797

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
