Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Saints Home Church of God in Christ, 317 Winspear Avenue, Buffalo, New York, November 2020. A contributing property to the NRHP-listed University Heights-Summit Park-Berkshire Terrace Historic District, the building was originally home to the Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist, a congregation that was founded in 1923 from a group that met at the First Mary Baker Eddy Reading Room on Elmwood Avenue, and bounced around a number of subsequent temporary locations before purchasing the building seen here at the end of the Second World War as military surplus from the War Assets Administration. Originally a chapel located on a military base near Oswego, the building was dismantled, shipped to its present site, and reconstructed in 1948. The church sports an austere vernacular design with faint Colonial Revival influences in keeping with the stylistic trends of the era, with a symmetrical façade, simple rectangular windows, and a central tower with pyramidal steeple. The Christian Science congregation dissolved in 1990, and it was purchased by its current occupant two years later.
