Summary

[edit]
Description Michigan History Center / Michigan Historical Marker #S622. Jesuit missionary Charles Dablon erected a small chapel of birchbark on Mackinac Island in 1670. Jacques Marquette moved the mission to Saint Ignace the following year. It was abandoned in 1706, but reestablished as Sainte Anne de Michilimackinac around 1715 at Fort Michilimackinac. British soldiers took the building with them across the frozen Straits of Mackinac upon relocating to Mackinac Island in the winter of 1780-81. It is the oldest parish dedicated to Sainte Anne in the United States, with baptism records dating back to April 1695.
