Description

ST. NINA OF GEORGIA RUSSIAN (PALEKH SCHOOL), 20TH CENTURY The young female martyr raising a cross and bringing a Book to her chest, her hair loose on her shoulders, dressed in an ochre robe and orange cape, their volume rendered by gilt folds, complemented by a white head cover; the hems of her garments and binding of her Book with opulent pearl and gem studded ornamentation, the saint standing on a landscape with sparse vegetation, on the opposite bank of the river the buildings of a town depicted in pastel colours against a greener scenery and blue skies; on the upper border the Mandylion; the decorative frame of the main image and the inscription below and, the haloes of the saint and Christ emulating contemporary metal and enamelwork
