VATICANE 77 un grand peintre, mit dans ses fresques ce quil avait sous les yeux : lapyramide de Gains Cestius à la porte dOstie, le monument de Ronmlusau Vatican, et entre les deux le crucifiement de saint Pierre. Cest loriginede lopinion qui favorise le Janicule, le premier document. Toutefois, à quiregarde bien, la fresque de Giotto ne rappelle daucune façon le sommetdune colline. Les deux cônes, comme deux cliandeliers, accompagnentla scène du martyre qui a lieu à leurs pieds en rase campagne. Giotto,certainement, ne songea pas au Janicule. Au xve siècle, lartiste chargé par Eugène IV de fondre les nouvellesportes de Saint-Pierre sinspira des fresques de Giotto.
