Description
English:
Sailing boat at Cape Maclear, Malawi, [s.d.]
"Ilala at Cape Maclear, Laws of Livingstonia" Photograph of a sailing ship anchored off shore at Cape Maclear, a town in the Mangochi District of Malawi's Southern Region. There is a tree in the middle of the picture and wooden baskets in the foreground. Ilala was the village in North-Western Rhodesia where David Livingstone, the pioneering Scottish missionary, died in 1873.; This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
