Description

My wife and kids had moved to South Africa in January 1992 as Esther had accepted a contract with an insurance company in Jo'burg. I had to work my notice so I could not join them until April. I had been desperately keen to visit South Africa since my teacher, Mr Edwards, had read John Buchan's 'Prester John' to the class in my first year at Grammar School. It was this that made me convince Ess that we wanted a Jo'burg based company and not a Cape Town one as we would be much closer to the Soupansberg and Zimbabwe Ruins where the action takes place. Sometime in 1993, I achieved my goal as we did the trip up the N1 to the Zimbabwe border driving through the first and visiting the second. I was not disappointed.

Having taken a week or two to settle in on my arrival Ess suggested I take the kids out after school to visit this park where I could get my first experience of African wildlife. It too was not disappointing. This mother was, as you would expect, very protective of her calf so we kept a safe distance away from them but every so often she would take offence at our presence and start charging towards the car only for her to stop about 20 yards away as if she had forgotten what it was that had made her so angry in the first place. She did this two or three times which while scary was also amazing to watch. Her calf would trot along after her finally joining her for a quiet munch on some very dry grass. One of the first things you are taught when watching big-game in Africa is 'Keep the Car Running' it was certainly good advice around these and the elephants we saw later and not just in Safari Parks. A completely unforgettable experience. Do it if you ever get the chance.
