Title
Saddle quern
Description
English: Saddle quern which may be made from a coarse grained quartzite erratic. The quern is a quatrefoil in plan with a worn concave upper surface. The base is smooth and rounded. Grain would be placed on the flat surface of the quern and ground into flour using the stone 'rubber' on top. A similar quern along with its handstone were excavated by Benjamin Howard Cunnington (1861 - 1950) from the kitchen midden below the turf on the South side of the Inner Head, Worm's Head, Rhossili, Gower, Wales, and dated to the Neolithic period. Saddle querns were in use in Britain from the late Neolithic into the Iron Age, being then replaced by rotary querns in many areas, but may have persisted in some places later
