Summary

[edit]
Description

The Queen of Heaven does not look pleased. Her mouth drops downwards, her eyes are empty, and she hangs with her head. And still she is one of the earliest statues of Mary in Sweden, dated to the late 11th century or the 12th century.

But things are not what they look like. The expression in her face is a heritage from ancient Rome and the earliest Christian tradition. In fact she is artistically related to the late imperial portraits. Her big slanting eyes and small mouth should be interpreted as an expression for supreme power and concentration

She originates from Mosjö in Närke but in style she might have been inspired by an English tradition of ivory carvings.
