Description
English:

Some farmers in the Puget Sound region harvested the bark of the buckthorn tree and sold it to drug companies. This particular cash crop was known as chitum or cascara sagrada. It was used for many years as a laxative. In this photo, western Washington farm workers are sacking cascara sagrada bark. The photo is believed to have been taken near Orting, around 1900.
