Title
English: S. S. Portland, ca. 1905
Description
English: Before 1897, the "Portland" carried freight and passengers between the Pacific Northwest and Alaskan ports. The ship also gained some fame for smuggling opium and Chinese workers. The vessel's most famous moment came on July 17, 1897, when it returned to Seattle carrying Klondike gold miners and their gold. This set off a mad rush to the Yukon gold fields.

This photo shows the "Portland" in about 1905.
