Title
SWYOR-74BE41: roman coin hoard + pottery + brooch fragment
Description
English: TICKHILL II, SOUTH YORKSHIRE

Richard Abdy

56 AE and grey ware pottery to AD 355 BM ref.: 2012 T896b

PAS ID: SWYOR-74BE41

Circumstances of discovery

Original find made by [finder x, name redacted] whilst using a metal-detector on cultivated land between Sept & Oct 2012. Same finder recovered addenda of fifteen during late 2012-Feb.2013 and are marked * after weight. [finder y, name redacted] found (also with metal detector) a second addenda of ten nummi in August 2015 marked $ after weight; as well as third addenda of two Constantinian nummi marked # after weight.

Description of coins

It seems likely that two separate periods of hoarding activity were mixed together through ploughing action at Tickhill. The majority of the coins, the nummi and a solitary radiate, could represent a fourth century hoard. For late second century denarius hoard and a contemporary fantail brooch fragment found at the same time see 2012 T896a (Tickhill I)

Description of the pottery fragments

Three fragments of Roman grey ware pottery (total weight: 68.47g) were found with the coins. Two are wall fragments while the third includes a portion of the pot's base. It is not certain whether they are associated with the denarius hoard or the nummi but the latter seems more likely given the quantity of coins in the fourth century group.
