Summary

[edit]
Description

A model of the cargo ship SS Clan Colquhoun at the Science Museum, South Kensington, 14 April 2007.

The SS Clan Colquhoun was a ‘turret ship’ built by William Doxford, Sunderland and completed in 1899, one of 10 built for the Clan Line in 1897-99. The ship weighed 5,860 tons gross.

The turret ship was an odd design which resulted in a low net tonnage relative to their deadweight which meant the cost of them transiting the Suez Canal was much less than it would otherwise have been. Doxfords built many such ships in 1892-1911 but when the Suez Canal Co. realised what was going on their regulations were altered to remove the cost advantage of these ships and so construction ceased.
