Summary

[edit]

This is a SD40T-2 "Tunnel Motor". These were built for the Southern Pacific to avoid overheating problems in the SP's long tunnels. Special low-mounted air intakes take in cool air from the floor of the tunnel, instead of the normal high-mounted air intakes that took in hot air, leading to overheating and locomotives shutting down.
