English: SPITTAL POND; SITE OF POSSIBLE LANDING OF SHIPWRECKED PORTUGUESE SAILORS IN 1543 WHO CARVED THE LETTERS RP FOR REX PORTUGALINE AND THE CROSS OF THE PORTUGUESE ORDER OF CHRIST; THE ROCKS HAD BEEN VANDALIZED BY GRAFFITI SO A METAL MOLD WAS MADE AND THE ORIGINAL INSCRIPTION WAS TAKEN TO A MUSEUM; BERMUDA WAS FIRST DISCOVERED BY THE SPANIARDS UNDER BERMUDEZ IN 1503 AND HE GAVE HIS NAME TO THE ISLAND; SPITTAL POND IS NOW BERMUDA'S LARGEST NATURE PRESERVE; NOTED FOR COASTAL SCENERY AND FOR THE CHECKERBOARD FORMATION ALONG THE SHORE.
