De speciaal afgezant van Barbados, Senator Alphea Wiggins, heeft een beleefdheidsbezoek gebracht aan de minister van Sport- en Jeugdzaken, Lalinie Gopal. Structurele uitwisselingsprogramma’s met betrekking tot jeugd en sport ontwikkeling waren de rode draad van het bezoek dat op vrijdag 2 augustus plaats heeft gevonden. Minister Gopal heeft de specifieke samenwerkingsgebieden van het ministerie kenbaar gemaakt bij de senator. Barbados staat bekend om haar rijke cricket deskundigheid. Naar aanleiding hiervan is besproken om deskundigheid, waaronder technische assistentie, te halen naar Suriname om de cricketsport onder mannen, vrouwen en jongeren te ontwikkelen. Suriname bevat momenteel 52 teams verspreidt in de districten Nickerie, Paramaribo, Commewijne, Brokopondo en Siplaiwini. Ook is er aandacht besteedt aan de manieren waarop schoolsport in Suriname verder ontwikkeld kan worden. Speciaal afgezant Wiggins is ook geïnformeerd over het jeugdbeleid. Zij heeft het voorstel gedaan om uitwisselingsprogramma’s te initiëren gezien Suriname de “Best model of Practice” heeft als het gaat om nationale jeugdontwikkeling. Wiggins gaf aan dat de jeugd in Barbados ook zoals in Suriname prioriteit geniet. Deze doelgroep wordt ook meegenomen in besluitvormingsprocessen. De senator en de minister zijn het beide mee eens dat er meer regionale integratie moet plaatsvinden middels onder andere het CARICOM Youth Ambassadors Programma. Voorts zijn er met betrekking tot jeugdontwikkeling fondsen beschikbaar, waaraan in CARICOM verband aanzet is gegeven aan de overige lidlanden om bij te dragen aan deze fondsen. |
