English: 151115-N-UN340-006 CHULA VISTA, Calif. (Nov. 15, 2015) U.S. Navy Rear Adm. David H. Lewis, Commander, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) and Dr. Stephen Russell, SPAWAR Chief Technology Officer judge robots during the SPAWAR-sponsored For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) LEGO league robotics qualifying tournament at Eastlake High School. FIRST robotics competitions combine the excitement of sports with science and technology and create a unique opportunity for students to compete for scholarships while designing, building, and programming robots with professional engineers. More that 50 SPAWAR volunteers assisted in the event as referees, judges, timers and mentors. As the Navy's Information Dominance systems command, SPAWAR supports and strongly encourages students to pursue careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
