Description

This is a Spanish piece of eight also known as a "pillar dollar" These coins called pieces of eight had a value of 8 reals and were used as currencies all over the world at the time. Many nations called them "dollars" as they were large, made of silver and were popular as a form of currency oftem more popular than the local currency in the land that they were used.

At the time there was probably no more well known form of currency than these pieces of eight which supplemented the currencies of many countries globally. These coins were probably one of the earliest form of international currency.
