Title
SOM-ABE277: Medieval ewer spout
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy zoomorphic ewer spout of late medieval date. The object takes the form of a stylised dog's head. The head is multi-faceted, with crude incised lines forming the eyes, ears and muzzle. There is a break to the rear of the head, which would have extended into a long, curving, tapering neck. There is a further, thin break, along the extent of the base, which widens towards the dog's 'muzzle'. The metal is in good condition with a shiny green patina and all surfaces are covered with prominent file marks. A similar example is illustrated by Lewis (1987, 4-5, fig 8a), found in the moat of Cardiff Castle and dated to the 15th century. However, the present example is cruder and more stylised in form.

Length: 35.60mm, Width: 15.24mm, Thickness: 16.64mm, Weight: 14.3g
