Summary

[edit]
Description

Soviet Cold-War era Battlefield Surveillance Radar The SNAR-10 combined the 1RL-127 “Big Fred” ground surveillance radar system with the standard MT-LB multipurpose tracked vehicle chassis. With a radar range of 10miles, its main use was locating enemy mortar and artillery positions, although the radar could also detect vehicles and low-flying helicopters. The designation ‘SNAR’ comes from Stantsiya Nazemnoy Artilleriskoy Razvedki, which translates as Ground Artillery Reconnaissance Station. Its NATO designation was MT-LB M1975 and I have also seen the system referred to as ‘Jaguar’, but this isn’t my specialist subject so if that’s incorrect please let me know! This example was captured from Iraqi forces during the 1991 Gulf War and is now part of the Imperial War Museum Collection. Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK.
