Description
English: U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. David R. Bohlander, right, a manager for the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) Infrastructure for the Atlas V launch and part of the Launch and Range Systems Directorate, Space and Missile Systems Center, U.S. Air Force Space Command at Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, Calif., monitors ground systems at a control console in Aerospace's Spacelift Telemetry Acquisition and Reporting System (STARS) lab in El Segundo, Calif., in preparation for an upcoming launch of an Atlas V rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., on Aug. 1, 2012. The Launch and Range Systems Directorate's mission is to "Define, develop, field, and sustain expendable launch vehicles and Eastern/Western Range Systems. Lead launch integration, mission assurance, launch campaigns, and range modernization." The STARS lab is the hub for all launch operations supported by Aerospace. STARS acquires and processes data which gives these military and civilian analysts the ability to monitor the rocket for anomalies. On Aug. 1, 2012, still photographers were given unprecedented approval for access to document "A Day in the Life of Air Force Space Command" at their respective bases to showcase the people that make the Air Force Space Command mission possible.
