iard, S. J., Bro. Chas. Staub,S. J., Bro. E. Brenans, S. J. 1878.—On the Feast of St. Joseph, pontifical high mass is sung by Rt. Rev.D. Manucy, Vicar Apostolic of Brownsville, in the presence of Rt. Rev. J. Quin-lan, bishop of Mobile, numerous priests and a large congregation of people. Asevere epidemic of yellow fever rages throughout the Southern States. No case ofsickness, however, at the college. On account of the epidemic and quarantine,only eleven boys are present at the opening of college in October. 1879.—On the Feast of St. Joseph, Rt. Rev. J. Quinlan celebrates ponti-fical mass. 1880.—April 29, Rev. J. Downey is appointed president. 1881.—A new frame building is erected along one side of the Seniors play-ground. This building will contain a reading room and library, and billiard room. 1882.—On March 2, a reception is tendered to Rt. Rev. J. Quinlan, bishopof Mobile, on his return from Rome. 1883.—Rt. Rev. J. Quinlan, second bishop of Mobile, dies at New Orleans,

SPRING HILL COLLEGE. 53 March 9. He may be considered the second founder of Spring Hill College, forit is owing, in great part, to his kind encouragement and substantial aid that thecollege was rebuilt after the disastrous fire. The college possessed no truerfriend. Rev. D. McKiniry, S. J., is appointed president, August 18. The bridgeacross the ravine is taken down. A new frame building, two stories high, iserected on the east side of the junior playground. In will contain on the groundfloor, reading room and library, music room and covered playground. The firststory will be used as an exhibition hall and the second story will serve as thecollege chapel. 1884.—April I, reception of Rt. Rev. D. Manucy, recently appointedbishop of Mobile. The Bishop is an alumnus of the college and taught here in1848. 1885.—No day scholars are any longer received at the college, only fullboarders.
