Title
SF-B2E9AB: Medieval padlock
Description
English: A fragment of a copper alloy probable medieval barrel padlock. Only one end survives. This has a narrow cylindrical body, tapering slightly towards one end where there is an irregular break with an indentation in the centre. A rectangular plate extends from one side, pierced with a small circular hole and with evidence of a break to one side. The fragment is slightly corroded with a bright green patina and worn breaks.

A very similar padlock is illustrated by Egan (1998, 93, fig.66, no.244). Most copper alloy padlocks from excavations in London were found in 12th or 13th century contexts (ibid., 93).

Length: 16.55mm, width: 13.09mm, thickness: 7.44mm, weight: 4.46g
