Description

Scotch House is located between O'Connell Street, the IFSC and Trinity College.


More interesting than the building is the Sheahan Memorial.


This monument to Constable Patrick Sheahan is located at the junction of Burgh Quay and Hawkins Street. It has been relocated at least once in the last few years because of the laying of tram tracks.


The monument commemorates the heroism of Patrick Sheahan when he tried to rescue a workman who was trapped at the bottom of a manhole. He and the workman, John Fleming, died as a result of the gases in the manhole, despite attempts by three other men to pull them to safety. Sheahan was already known as a local hero, having saved the lives of an elderly couple, whom he carried from a falling building, and wrestled with a runaway bull in Grafton Street.
