Summary

[edit]
Description The exterior shots of the second station in Weesen I already took in 2018. This series of photos shows interior areas and the signal box. The first train station in Weesen from 1859 fell victim to a route relocation in 1969. But this new station was also closed to passenger traffic in 2013. Of course, the signal box continues to run as usual in such mothballings. And as Domino 55 it is almost a rarity these days. The special thing about this signal box Domino 55 is, that it has dwarf signals. The versions up to 1961 didn't have that. A fifty-year-old relay signal box on the busy Zurich - Chur line that controls modern trains. That’s fascinating. But its days are numbered. There are plans to replace it. Not immediately, but within the decade. The the old station was in the village, and even international express trains stopped there for the benefit of tourism. This new station was planned here on the other side of the Linth Canal because of the large volume of traffic that the gravel loading brought with it. But after a rockfall in 1974, no more gravel could be mined in Weesen. For passenger traffic it was actually too far away from the village, and therefore all for nothing. It is not an architectural gem. But as long as the signal box is built into it, it cannot be broken off. Some of the rooms are rented. This is the abandoned station office with the control panel on the side of the tracks and the ticket counters on the other side. Switzerland, Sep 10, 2021. (1/25)
