Description Portrait von Charles Brown, Gründer der SLM. Charles Brown, geboren in Uxbridge bei London, absolvierte seine Lehrzeit bei Maudslay & Field, einer Maschinenfabrik in London, und kam 1851 in die Schweiz, um bei Sulzer zu arbeiten. 1871 trennte er sich von der Firma, um in Winterthur die SLM zu gründen, die 1873 ihre erste Lokomotive für die Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn auslieferte. 1884 verliess Brown die Lokomotivfabrik bereits wieder, um die technische Leitung der Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon zu übernehmen.
