Im Laufe der achtjährigen Bauzeit allerdings hatte die Elektrotechnik große Fortschritte gemacht und war in das Bewusstsein der Menschen eingedrungen. Außer in Deutschland wurden die ersten Bahnstrecken sowohl in der Schweiz wie in Italien erfolgreich betrieben, also gerade in den beiden Ländern, die durch den Simplontunnel verbunden werden sollten. Die Sorge um eine ausreichende Belüftung des 19,8 km langen, zunächst einspurigen Tunnels beim Betrieb mit Dampflokomotiven schien angesichts mangelnder Erfahrungen mit einem Tunnel bisher nie erreichter Länge durchaus berechtigt, auch wenn umfangreiche Entlüftungsanlagen Teil des Tunnelprojektes waren. Der Bau des Tunnels war bereits weit fortgeschritten, als im Jahre 1905 die Firma Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) den damals noch jungen Schweizerischen Bundesbahnen (SBB) ein äußerst interessantes Angebot vorlegte, des Inhaltes, die Strecke auf eigene Kosten innerhalb eines knappen Jahres auszurüsten, erforderliche Lokomotiven zu beschaffen und den Betrieb gegen ein zu erstattendes Kilometergeld für eine begrenzte Zeit selbst zu übernehmen. Trotz nicht unerheblicher Bedenken angesichts der internationalen Bedeutung der neuen Strecke und eben doch noch ungenügender Erfahrungen mit dem elektrischen Betrieb nahmen die SBB das attraktive Angebot von BBC an. Selbst für den Fall bester Bewährung der neuen Betriebsart hatten aber die SBB die Übernahme der Anlagen und Fahrzeuge nicht fest zugesagt. Am 1. Juni 1906 wurde die Strecke mit dem zunächst einspurigen Tunnel in Betrieb genommen, ausgerüstet mit Drehstromtechnik und zweipoliger Fahrleitung bei 3 kV Spannung und einer Frequenz von 15 Hz. Die gesamte Strecke zwischen den vorläufigen Endpunkten der elektrischen Traktion in Brig und Iselle hatte eine Länge von 22 km. Möglich wurde dieser Kraftakt auch durch den Verzicht der Valtellina-Bahn auf zwei Lokomotiven (Fb [Be] 3/5 Nr. 364-365), die bei der Schweizer Industrie für diese Bahn bereits im Bau waren und die demzufolge der bereits erprobten Bauart für die Valtellina-Bahn weitgehend entsprachen. Weitere drei Lokomotiven ungarischer Herkunft (Fb 3/5 Nr. 361-363) wurden aus Italien ausgeliehen (Bild). Die Einstellung der festen Geschwindigkeitsstufen von 34 und 68 km/h erfolgen jedoch nicht durch Kaskadenschaltung, sondern durch Polumschaltung der Motoren. Für eine Übergangszeit mussten aus Mangel an elektrischen Lokomotiven dennoch zusätzlich Dampflokomotiven eingesetzt werden. Der elektrische Betrieb der Simplon-Bahn bewährte sich von Anbeginn so gut, dass bis zum Jahr 1919 der Betrieb auf das obere Rhonetal bis Sion/Sitten ausgedehnt wurde, auch als Folge des akuten Kohlenmangels durch den Ersten Weltkrieg. Einen technischen Fortschritt bedeuteten die schon 1907 gelieferten neuen Lokomotiven Fb 4/4 Nr. 366-369 mit der Achsfolge D, denn diese waren erstmals mit Kurzschlussläufern in den Drehstrommotoren ausgerüstet, so dass die Schleifringe zur Erregung der Läufer entfallen konnten. Vier Geschwindigkeiten konnten durch Polumschaltung der zwei Wicklungen der Ständer erreicht werden. Diese Loks leisteten bereits 950 kW. 1914 schließlich konnte mit der 1 D1 Stangen-Lokomotive Ce 4/6 Nr. 371 eine neue,leistungsfähigere Lok in Betrieb genommen werden, die bei 86 t Gewicht eine Leistung von 1.500 kW erreichte.Für die Elektrifizierung der 1913 fertiggestellten Lötschbergstrecke, die in Brig auf die Simplonlinie trifft, wählte man von Anbeginn das Einphasensystem mit 15 kV und 16 2/3 Hz, so dass in Brig zwei unterschiedliche Spannungs- und Frequenzsysteme zusammenstießen. Ebenso wurde die Rhone-Strecke vom Genfer See bis Sion mit Einphasenwechselstrom elekrifiziert und schließlich auch der Streckenabschnitt von Sion nach Brig auf dieses System umgestellt. So endete im Jahr 1930 der erfolgreiche Drehstrombetrieb am Simplon mit der Umstellung auf das inzwischen zum Standard gewordenen Einphasensystem.“ |
